I am Assistant Professor of European Studies with a focus on 'Europe in the World' at the Department of European Studies at the University of Amsterdam. I have worked as a lecturer at the Department of European Studies, UvA (2018-2020), as a lecturer at the Department of Political Science and Public Administration at VU Amsterdam (2017-2018) as well as a postdoctoral researcher at the Amsterdam Centre for Contemporary European Studies (ACCESS Europe) (2016-2017). I was a PhD researcher and lecturer at the Institute of Political Science at the University of Tübingen where I defended my PhD in 2015.
My research studies the European Union’s external relations from a feminist perspective, focusing on the EU’s women’s and LGBTQ rights promotion in Turkey and the EU’s security and defence policy. I combine Feminist Security Studies approaches with a Foucauldian governmentality perspective. I am elected co-chair of the Council of European Studies Gender and Sexuality Research Network. I am one of the coordinators of the UACES Research Network “Gendering EU Studies”, which aims to advance feminist research on the EU. I coordinated the 'Gender and Sexuality in European (Geo)Politics' online lecture series with the Amsterdam Centre for European Studies (ACES). I am principal investigator in the interdisciplinary research project "Emotions in European Politics: Affective Dynamics and Complex Societal Challenges" (since 2021) funded by the Amsterdam Centre for European Studies (ACES). The project analyses the role of affective dynamics in debates in the European Parliament in different policy fields.
I co-edited (with Natalie Welfens, UvA, and Anna van der Vleuten, Radboud University Nijmegen) a special issue for Political Studies Review (vol. 18, issue 3) on 'Slipping Off or Turning the Tide: Gender Equality in European Union's External Relations in Times of Crisis'.
My book “EU Democracy Promotion and Governmentality: Turkey and Beyond” was published by Routledge in March 2019 (Interventions series). It shows how the neoliberal rationalities of EU funding (de)politicised human rights organisations in Turkey. It specifically focuses on the agency of Turkish women's, LGBTQ and human rights organisations working with EU grants; zooming in on e.g. their resistance or co-optation.
I am teaching and supervising in the BA European Studies as well as in the MA European Studies at the Department of European Studies. Read more about my teaching in Advalvas Nr. 15 28 Maart 2018 by Joeke Berg on page 27 (in Dutch).
