PAinT - Paint Alterations in Time

The Regents of St Elisabeth's Hospital

Frans Hals 1641

Oil on canvas (lined) - Frans Hals Museum, Haarlem

Study and treatment of the Regents’ group portrait is planned for the Hals exhibition in 2013.

The last complete restoration of this painting involved the cleaning and wax-resin lining by Derix de Wild and his son Martin in the early 20th C. The conservation history of this painting and the other group portraits of Frans Hals is documented extensively. Furthermore, De Wild conducted early scientific investigations during which material was saved for future research. This creates the unique opportunity to evaluate the longterm effects of De Wild's and previous treatments on the chemical reactivity of the oil paints and their present condition.
