PAinT - Paint Alterations in Time

Group of four portraits

Thomas de Keijser and studio, 1600-50

Oil on panel - Amsterdam Museum

The removal of varnish and overpaint from four portraits in the UvA C&R studio revealed damage that could be related to the pigmentation of different paint layers. The dark clothes worn by the sitters appeared very damaged, lead white containing passages had been well preserved.

Although the influence of pigmentation on paint sensitivity is well known, advice for safe treatment methods for such sensitive areas is lacking.
